Did I know?
More than a decade may have passed since the last visit to my 大舅 house. Things and events had evolved. Little did I know I'm a 表叔/表舅 to 7 of my 表侄子 & 表侄女.
In the past, I'd very hazy memory of the multitude of achievements of my 表哥 & 表姐. Now, everything becomes vivid. They had claimed some of the many prestigious awards & scholarships like President Scholarship, EDB Scholarship, LKY Prize for Mathematics and Science etc... and one of them was even the first Singaporean to be the Valedictorian in Princeton University!
Some quotes from him during his speech was quite thought-provoking...
"There's no point in learning something which you're not interested in. And one sort of maxim that I have is love what you do and do what you love. I believe that if something is worth doing at all, it's worth doing well."
"One general guideline, something that I picked up from Princeton, is that I want to live a life that matters. And I want to do something that would have a positive impact on this world that we live in."
One intriguing comment was that he kept awake till 8am in the following morning just to study and that he hated his life. However, his perseverance had definitely paid off.
Be it an intelligent or intellectually-challenged person (or anywhere between the extremities), you'll definitely achieve your own personal expectations if you persevere and strive for what is worth doing, and doing it well and cheerfully.
Now I know.
